Obituary

Derek William Giese was born on November 2, 1987 and passed away at home on March 3, 2024. We are deeply saddened by his sudden death. Derek is survived by his mother Judith, Step-father Darcy, Sister Aubrey (Kyle), Brother Dane (Stephanie), Step-sister Stephanie (Joe), Step-brother Cody (Jacquelyn), Nieces Willa and Avery and Nephews Landon and Colton. Derek was preceded in death by his father Kim Giese who passed away in 2003. We take comfort in knowing they are now together.

When Derek was born the family lived in Taylor, Michigan. They moved to Livonia when Derek was in early elementary school and later moved to Trenton where Derek attended middle and high school. In recent years Derek was living and working in Waterford.

Derek thrived on his ability to bring a smile to your face and would do just about anything to make someone laugh. His nieces and nephews LOVED playing with silly Uncle Derek. Everyone who knew Derek felt his big heart and generosity. In his youth, he enjoyed playing football and even dreamed of becoming a marine biologist. Throughout his life, he loved music and songs often spoke to him in a therapeutic way. He also had a great love for food and cooking—at one time even considering opening his own food cart.

His sudden passing has left us completely heartbroken. Over the years, Derek struggled to overcome mental illness and substance use disorder despite multiple remissions and a strong desire to live a full life. We find comfort in knowing his soul is now at peace and he is no longer suffering. He will be desperately missed by all those who knew him.

A memorial will be held at St Cyprians Church Riverview March 16th, 2024 at 9:30am with a short service starting at 10am. A luncheon at the church will follow the service.
